Reactivation of the Siemensbahn
In August 2025, OBERMEYER was finally awarded the contract for the important urban renovation and mobility project "Reactivation of the Siemensbahn". The project is a central part of the i-2030 infrastructure upgrade program for the German Berlin-Brandenburg metropolitan area. (For more information, please see “About i-2030” at the end of this article.)
As the largest single investment in Siemens' history, the company plans to develop the Siemensstadt Square innovation and residential site by 2030. Prior to the official opening of the new Berlin district, the Siemensbahn is to run again on the historic route. The reactivation of the S-Bahn connection will enable a fast link to the S-Bahn network, Berlin Main Station and BER Airport.
The Siemensbahn is a 4.5 km long S-Bahn line in Berlin, Germany. Originally opened in 1929 and discontinued in 1980, it is now to be comprehensively modernized and reactivated as a core element of the i-2030 infrastructure program. Upon completion, the line will connect Jungfernheide Station to Gartenfeld Station and will integrate the new Siemensstadt Square district with the Berlin Ringbahn (Circular Railway), Berlin Main Station, and BER Airport, significantly improving regional transport connectivity.
The project marks a significant milestone for the Eastern Region. OBERMEYER is responsible for the implementation planning, design, and construction supervision under the Alliance Model (IPA – Integrated Project Delivery). The project will start in October 2025 and completion is scheduled for the end of 2029.
The project faces particular challenges in resource coordination, schedule control, and budget management – key factors for successful implementation. In addition to the Berlin branch, OBERMEYER’s offices in Dresden, Leipzig, Magdeburg, and Erfurt are also actively involved.
About i-2030
The Berlin-Brandenburg metropolitan region is the fastest-growing area in Germany in terms of urban and regional passenger transportation. Project i-2030 is an infrastructure upgrade initiative jointly developed by the states of Berlin and Brandenburg, Deutsche Bahn, and the Berlin-Brandenburg Transport Association (VBB) to address the increasing transportation demands in the coming years. The region has a highly mobile population, and residents rely heavily on a high-quality rail transport system. In recent years, with rising travel demand, expanding the rail network and alleviating bottlenecks between local, long-distance, and freight transport have become urgent priorities for optimizing the transportation system.
The project i-2030 outlines infrastructure upgrades across eight key expansion corridors, accompanied by a series of measures to optimize the S-Bahn network. All participating parties share a clear and common goal: to sustainably improve the rail system, provide passengers with more frequent, comfortable, and reliable travel experiences, and collectively move toward a better transportation future.
