OBERMEYER consortium was shortlisted for the Hefei Binhu Science City

OBERMEYER consortium shortlisted for "International Competition for Regional Planning and Urban Design of the Chaohu Peninsula and Core Area of Hefei Binhu Science City"

Background

The project aims to comprehensively support the province to build a science and technology innovation curb with significant influence and facilitate Hefei's eastward expansion and its integration into the Yangtze River Delta region. It seeks to develop a world-class, international, technology-oriented, and ecologically sustainable planning scheme. With a perspective that encompasses Anhui Province and beyond, the project will scientifically outline the development vision for the next 10 and 25 years. It will also refine the significant tasks for short-term, medium-term, and long-term development, thereby guiding the high-standard construction and high-quality growth of the Chaohu Peninsula area.

The plan will encompass a regional strategic study and planning for approximately 700 square kilometers of the Chaohu Peninsula and an additional 2,650 square kilometers surrounding Chaohu Lake. Within the peninsula, four clusters, totaling about 60 square kilometers, will be selected for urban design in the core area. The approach will involve drawing on advanced international urban design concepts to systematically address various aspects, including development positioning, regional structure, functional layout, ecological environment, public space, urban landscape, key public facilities, architectural form, development intensity, transportation systems, and underground space. This comprehensive strategy aims to achieve an integrated urban spatial design for the core area and to establish design control guidelines.

OBERMEYER together with its partners - Beijing Tsinghua Tongheng Planning and Design Institute (THUPDI) and Tsinghua Holdings Technology Innovation (THTI), were successfully shortlisted for the International Competition for the Regional Planning of the Chaohu Peninsula and the Urban Design of the Core Area of Hefei Binhu Science City. Following their successful collaboration in planning an innovation city for Wuxi Binhu Lingshan Bay [link], OBERMEYER and THUPDI are once again teaming up, this time with the added support and expertise of THTI, to craft a high-level, international, and regionally distinctive planning and design solution for the Chaohu Peninsula area of Hefei Binhu Science City!

It is reported that the competition attracted numerous design organizations from both domestic and international communities. Over 70 design firms from around the globe participated, hailing from countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Australia. In total, 26 applications were received, including those from consortiums.
